Beginning in the early 1980s in Kingston Jamaica, this music developed out of a response to the popularity of roots reggae. At first, it was characterized by selectors toasting on top of dub reggae, soon evolving into a unique blend of electronic sounds, rhythmic beats, and frequently explicit lyrics. The sound saw further development with the intr
